An established practice and a new service are opposite propositions, and this one is explicitly the former. The clinic template exists, the referral patterns exist, and the theatre allocation is already divided — which usually means a full diary sooner, and less room to reshape how the service runs. For most surgeons a year or two out of fellowship that trade is the right way round.
Duluth sits on Lake Superior and acts as the referral centre for north-eastern Minnesota and north-western Wisconsin, a catchment far larger than the city's own population suggests.
